It is not too late to go rock collecting! Just this morning I went on a lovely walk along the beach. The weather was gorgeous, and the beach was nearly deserted. Here are three books to inspire you and your kids to head to the beach for an end-of-the-season rock collecting trip.
Stones by H.P. Wood. A good book to share with kids ages one through six to encourage them to play with and enjoy rocks. This book has nice photographs of kids throwing rocks into water, making rock sculptures, sharing rocks with friends and more. Ages 1+
Cool Rocks: Creating Fun and Fascinating Collections! by Tracy Kompelien. In addition to introducing kids to rocks and minerals, Cool Rocks offers kids crafty rock projects (e.g. pet rocks) and suggestions for creating rock collections. This book inspired my son to begin cleaning and labeling his rocks. Ages 6+
If your child gets excited about rock collecting and wants to identify rocks, it is very helpful to find a local rock guide. For those of you in Northern Minnesota, check out Rock Picker’s Guide to Lake Superior’s North Shore.
Rock Picker’s Guide to Lake Superior’s North Shore by Mark Sparky Stensaas and Rick Kollath. Recommends good rock collecting beaches along the North Shore and includes drawings and descriptions of various types of rocks. While this is not a children’s book, it is a good book to share with children who are enthusiastic about rocks.
